Остров Гемилер ранее назывался островом Св. Николая. Археологи допускают, что остров мог быть местом первоначального захоронения Святого Николая - покровителя моряков. До сих пор видны остатки пристаней, домов, а на вершине горы – развалины монастыря, пяти церквей и остатки могил. Ученые полагают, что это поселение основал Святой Николай. Он выбрал этот остров для жизни, спасаясь от преследования римлян. Кстати, название острова с турецкого переводится как “остров моряков.
