Construction of the church began in 1883 during the reign of Alexander III, two years after the assassination of his father Alexander II. The church was dedicated to being a memorial to his father. A temporary shrine was erected on the site of the attack while plans and fundraising for a more permanent memorial were undertaken.

Значительную часть своей жизни я прожила в славном городе Самара. И с детства меня забавляли названия улиц, магазинов и кинотеатров радом с домом. Но я даже не задумывалась, откуда берут свое название улицы Стара-Загора и Георгия Димитрова, кинотеатр «Шипка», магазинов «Младость», «Сладкиши», «Загорка» и т.д. И только повзрослев узнала, что это не просто вычурные для русского языка названия, а непосредственная связь городом-побратимом в Болгарии – Стара Загора.
